Nebraska's Sam Haiby earned the first Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week award of her career when the conference office announced its weekly honors on Monday, Feb. 4.
Haiby, a 5-9 guard from Moorhead, Minn., put together her best week in conference play by averaging 15.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in just 19.5 minutes per game off the bench for the Big Red. She hit 66.7 percent of her shots from the field (10-15), including 75 percent (3-4) of her three-point attempts while connecting on 87.5 percent (7-8) of her free throws.
Haiby capped her week with a team-high 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting against Indiana. She opened the week with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting in just 17 minutes in a win at Purdue. Haiby set a career high by hitting a trio of three-pointers against the Boilermakers, including a running half-court buzzer beater to end the third quarter.
In eight quarters, Haiby hit four shots to close quarters, including a buzzer-beating driving layup the length of the court to end the third quarter against Indiana.
For the season, Haiby is averaging 10.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 21.5 minutes per game as one of the Big Ten's most productive freshmen. She joins fellow Husker Leigha Brown among the list of Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week honorees in 2018-19. Brown earned the honor on Jan. 7.
Haiby shared the Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week award with Michigan's Naz Hillmon, who captured her fourth weekly award of the season. Haiby, Brown and Hillmon will square off against each other on Thursday in Ann Arbor when the Huskers take on Michigan. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. with live television coverage by BTN.

Lincoln - Sam Haiby scored 17 points and Hannah Whitish added 16, but Nebraska could not overcome a double-digit third-quarter deficit in an 82-78 loss to Indiana on Sunday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
After building a seven-point lead in the first quarter, Nebraska fell behind Indiana by 12 points late in the third before rallying in a possession-for-possession game throughout the fourth period.
Trailing 58-46 with 2:30 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Huskers rallied to tie the score at 65 and again at 68 with just over four minutes left, but Indiana made enough plays down the stretch to escape with a victory.
Nebraska slipped to 5-6 in the Big Ten and 10-12 overall. The Huskers are 1-5 in conference games decided by two possessions or less after playing their 10th game of the season decided by six or fewer points. Indiana improved to 17-6 and 6-5 in the league by improving to 5-4 on the year in two possessions games.
Haiby, a freshman from Moorhead, Minn., got her 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and a 7-for-8 effort at the free throw line, while Whitish notched her sixth consecutive game in double figures with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. She was also 3-for-6 from three-point range.
Senior Maddie Simon gave the Huskers a spark off the bench by scoring all 12 of her points in the second half. She scored 10 points in a 7:26 span to help Nebraska erase Indiana's 58-46 lead to tie the game at 65 on Simon's three-pointer with 5:42 left. Simon also led the Huskers with seven rebounds and two steals.
Sophomore Kate Cain added nine points, six rebounds and two blocks for the Big Red, while Taylor Kissinger pitched in eight points, three boards and two assists.
Ali Patberg led Indiana with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including a three-pointer with 3:59 left that gave the Hoosiers the lead for good at 71-68. Patberg. The junior guard also sank 3-of-4 free throws in the final 30.6 seconds to help IU seal the win.
Jaelynn Penn pitched in 20 points and five rebounds, before fouling out with 30.3 seconds left. Penn scored five straight points, including a three-pointer, to push IU's lead to 76-70 with 2:06 to play.
Senior Kym Royster contributed a double-double for the Hoosiers with 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Royster went 7-for-8 from the field and 5-for-6 at the free throw line, including Indiana's final point of the game with eight seconds left.
As a team, Indiana hit 46 percent (29-63) of its shots from the field, including 21-of-34 (.618) combined in the second and third quarters. The Hoosiers finished 6-for-18 from three-point range, including 6-for-14 in the second half, and sealed the victory by going 18-for-21 at the free throw line (.857) for the game. IU out-rebounded the Huskers 37-36, but Nebraska outscored Indiana 15-11 on second-chance points. The Hoosiers also won a tight turnover battle, 13-12.
Nebraska hit 44.3 percent (27-61) of its shots, but just 4-of-22 threes (.182) against the Big Ten's best three-point field goal percentage defense. The Huskers hit 20-of-29 free throws (.690) in the game.
Nebraska got off to a solid start by jumping to an 8-2 lead and building the margin to 15-8 with a minute left in the first quarter. However, junior wing Nicea Eliely was whistled for her second foul with a minute left in the quarter. NU closed the first period with a 17-12 lead.
The Huskers maintained a 25-22 lead despite sophomore center Kate Cain picking up her second foul early in the second quarter, but Indiana put together an 8-0 run over a two-minute stretch midway through the period to take a 30-25 lead.
Indiana took a 36-32 lead to the locker room at the half by hitting 48.4 percent (15-31) of its first-half shots, primarily on mid-range jumpers and action to the rim. Royster led Indiana with 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field, while also going 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Royster added six first-half rebounds. Patberg added eight points and four assists for the Hoosiers in the half. The Hoosiers hit 11-of-15 shots from the floor in the second quarter, after going just 4-for-16 in the first period.
Nebraska answered by shooting 45.2 percent (14-31) from the field, led by 11 first-half points from Whitish, including the only two three-pointers of the half by either team. Kissinger added eight points at the rim for the Big Red. Indiana won the first-half rebounding battle 18-17, and the Hoosiers also won the first-half turnover war, 9-7.
Nebraska returns to Big Ten road action on Thursday night when the Huskers travel to Michigan. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Wolverines at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor is set for 6 p.m. (CT) with live national television coverage provided by the Big Ten Network. Free live audio will be available on Huskers.com from the Husker Sports Network.

The Nebraska men’s basketball team got another 20-point performance from James Palmer Jr. and career efforts from Tanner Borchardt and Thomas Allen, but it was not enough in a 71-64 loss at Illinois Saturday afternoon.
Borchardt set career highs with 12 points and 18 rebounds, scoring in double figures for the first time in his career and pulling down double-digit rebounds for the second time in his career. While posting his first career double-double, Borchardt’s 18 rebounds tied for the most rebounds by a Husker in more than a decade. Palmer nearly had a double-double of his own, scoring a game-high 22 points and grabbing eight rebounds. While Palmer reached the 20-point plateau for the 11th time this season, Allen had 11 points, his highest total in a Big Ten Conference game and the sophomore scored in double figures in back-to-back conference games for the first time in his career.
Behind Borchardt’s big day, Nebraska grabbed 50 rebounds and was plus-14 on the glass, both of which were its best efforts in a Big Ten game this year and second-highest totals of the season. The Huskers also benefited from an Illinois team that hit just 9-of-23 free throws, but the Illini shot 48.2 percent from the field and hit 8-of-20 3-pointers, while Nebraska shot just 35.7 percent and was 3-of-23 from beyond the arc.
With the loss, Nebraska fell to 13-9 overall and 3-8 in Big Ten play. Illinois was led by Kipper Nichols, who tied his season high with 18 points after being held scoreless in the previous five games. The Illini, which won for the third time in six games, improved to 7-15 on the season and moved to 3-8 in conference action.
Nebraska led by as many as five in the first half, but the Huskers struggled over the final 12 minutes of the period, making only three field goals and scoring just 11 points. Illinois took advantage, outscoring Nebraska by 14 during the final 12 minutes to take a 38-29 lead into the locker room. NU shot just 32.3 percent from the line in the first half, and the Huskers were 3-of-12 from beyond the arc and just 6-of-13 at the free-throw line.
Illinois scored the first seven points of the game to force a quick Husker timeout, but Palmer, who scored 14 first-half points, hit back-to-back 3-pointers after the timeout to cap a 10-0 run that gave Nebraska a three-point lead. The Huskers stretched the lead to five at 18-13 on a dunk from Amir Harris with at the 12:10 mark, but Nebraska missed 10 of its final 13 shots of the half.
Following Harris’ dunk, Nebraska went scoreless for nearly four minutes, during which time Illinois went on a 10-0 run to turn a two-point deficit into a five-point lead. Nichols, who had not scored in his last five games, scored seven straight points during the run. Illinois led 27-23 with five minutes to play in the half, but a 9-2 run stretched the lead to 11 with 2:59 remaining. Nebraska scored four of the final six points of the period to pull within nine at the break.
The offensive struggles continued to start the second half, as Nebraska did not score for the first three minutes of the period and didn’t hit its first field goal until more than four minutes into the half. Illinois meanwhile made four of its first six shots in the second half and led 46-33 at the first media timeout of the period.
After the slow start, Nebraska made 6-of-8 shots during one stretch – including three baskets from Allen – to pull within eight at the 12-minute mark. Back-to-back baskets from Glynn Watson Jr. trimmed the lead to seven at 54-47 with 10 minutes to play, but Nebraska was held scoreless for the next five minutes, leading to a 6-0 run that pushed the Illinois lead back to double digits at 60-47 with less than six minutes to play.
Nebraska was able to get the lead back down to nine two minutes later, before Illinois stretched the lead back to 14. The Huskers would not go away however, as Borchardt scored four points and Palmer added three during a 7-0 run that pulled Nebraska to within seven at 67-60 with 1:26 left. But that was as close as Nebraska missed seven of its final eight shots.
Nebraska returns to action on Wednesday, when the Huskers host No. 21 Maryland at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network, with the Husker Sports Network providing radio coverage.
Nebraska Postgame Notes*-Tanner Borchardt grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds, betting his previous high of 10 against Stetson on Dec. 29, 2017. It is the third straight game he has grabbed at least six rebounds. The 18 rebounds is the most by a Husker since Ed Morrow Jr. grabbed 18 against Gardner-Webb on Dec. 18, 2016. The last Husker to have more was Aleks Maric, who had 19 against Missouri 2007.
*-Borchardt’s 12-point, 18-rebound double-double was the first of his career. He is the fourth Husker to record a double-double this season. His 12 points were a career high (previous best was eight on two occasions).
*-Borchardt is the fifth Husker this season - second in as many games – to grab at least 10 rebounds.
*-James Palmer Jr. has been in double figures 22 times in 23 games, as he finished with 22 points. It was the 11th 20-point game of the year and 19th of his career. He now has 992 career points at Nebraska,
*-Nebraska finished with 18 second-chance points, its highest since getting 19 against Creighton on Dec. 8
*-Nebraska out-rebounded Illinois, 50-36, the first time the Huskers out-rebounded opponents in consecutive games since the first three games of the season.
*-Nebraska went 11-of-21 from the foul line, shooting a season-low 52.4 percent from the line.
*-Nebraska’s 10-0 run in the first half marked the Huskers’ 19th double-figure run this season.
